In Fatima, Portugal, during the First World War, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared six times to three shepherd children, Lucia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos (1907-2005) and her cousins Francisco de Jesus Marto (1908-1919) and Jacinta de Jesus Marto (1910-1920) between 13 May and 13 October, 1917.  At the time Lucia was aged 10, Francisco 9 and Jacinta 7. Prior to this, between April and October 2016, the Guardian Angel of Portugal, the Angel of Peace, had appeared three times to the children.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, known in this apparition as Our Lady of Fatima, gave a number of messages, prayers and secrets to the children, which Lucia later recorded. Lucia became a Discalced Carmelite nun and lived until the age of 97. Francisco and Jacinta died as children, and were both canonised on 13 May 2017.

The last apparition of Our Lady in Fatima took place on 13 October, 1917. An immense crowd of over 70,000 people were present on this last occasion and witnessed the miracle of the sun.

On this day it was raining, and the ground of the Cova da Iria, trampled like never before, was muddy. The Rosary was recited before the Blessed Virgin appeared to the children. As usual, a change in the light, announcing the apparition, was seen by the witnesses. After the Blessed Virgin had appeared and spoken to the children, the rain stopped instantaneously, the clouds disappeared, and the sky became clear. The multitude of people turned toward the sun, which appeared free from clouds and in its zenith. It looked like a plaque of dull silver, and it was possible to look at it without the least discomfort. It might have been an eclipse which was taking place. But at that moment a great shout went up, spectators shouted: "A miracle! A miracle!" and before the astonished eyes of the crowd, whose aspect was biblical as they eagerly searched the sky, the sun trembled, made sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws, and the sun "danced" according to the local expression of the people. Some fainted. At last, it all stopped, and the sun resumed its normal and natural course. In that few moments’ time, the clothes soaked by the rain had completely dried.

A number of eyewitness accounts of this great miracle are recorded in an article at the Marian website Mother of All Peoples: Eyewitness Accounts of the Solar Miracle of Fatima.

In 1930 the Church proclaimed the supernatural character of the apparitions and a shrine was erected at Fatima. Pope Pius XII approved the Fatima apparitions in 1940. The Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima is 13 May.

A full account of the apparitions at Fatima and Our Lady's messages are detailed on the website of The Fatima Center.

Another detailed account of the apparitions of the Angel of Portugal and the Blessed Virgin Mary is provided on the website of EWTN.

The Five Fatima Prayers

The Pardon Prayer (Theological Prayer)

Given by the Angel of Peace during the First Apparition of the Angel to the three shepherd children of Fatima in the spring of 1916. After teaching this prayer the angel said "Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications". The theological virtues are faith, hope and charity.

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I beg pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee. Amen.

Oratio Veniae

Deus meus, in te credo, te adoro, tibi confido, te amo! Pro illis qui non credent, non adorant, non confident, et non amant veniam supplico.

The Angel's Prayer (Trinitarian Prayer, or Act of Reparation to the Most Holy Trinity)

Given by the Angel of Peace during the Third Apparition of the Angel in October 1916. The Angel appeared to the three shepherd children holding a chalice in his hands, with a Host above it from which drops of Blood were falling into the chalice.

O Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which He is offended. By the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.

The Eucharistic Prayer

Given by Our Lady on 13 May 1917.

O Most Holy Trinity, I adore Thee; my God, my God, I love Thee in the Most Blessed Sacrament!

Oratio Eucharistica

Sanctissima Trinitas, te adoro! Deus meus, Deus Meus, te amo in Sanctissimo Sacramento.

The Sacrifice Prayer

Given by Our Lady on 13 June 1917, Our Lady said to the children "Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say [this prayer] many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice".

O my Jesus, it is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners and in reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer this sacrifice to Thee.

Oratio Sacrificii

O Iesu, est propter amorem tui, et conversionem peccatorum, et in reparatione peccatorum contra cor Mariae Immaculatum commissorum ut orem.

The Fatima Prayer (Rosary Decade Prayer)

Given by Our Lady during the Third Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to the three shepherd children on 13 July 1917. Now this prayer is traditionally prayed after the 'Glory Be' for each decade of the Rosary.

O My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.

Oratio Fatima (Oratio Decadis)

O Mi Iesu, dimitte nobis debita nostra, libera nos ab igne inferni, conduc in caelum omnes animas, praesertim illas quae maxime indigent misericordia tua.

Pray the Rosary Every Day

At Fatima Our Lady wished devotion to her Immaculate Heart, and she used the title Our Lady of the Rosary. Throughout her apparitions, Our Blessed Mother stressed prayer, fasting and sacrifice to obtain peace for the world and the conversion of sinners, and she urged the praying of the Rosary every day.

First Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima – 13 May 1917:

"Pray the rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war."

Second Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima – 13 June 1917:

"[Jesus] wishes to establish devotion to my Immaculate Heart in the world. I promise salvation to those who embrace it; and these souls will be beloved of God like flowers arranged by me to adorn His throne.

Third Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima – 13 July 1917:

"Pray the Rosary every day in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary, in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war, for she alone can be of any avail."

Sixth Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima – 13 October 1917:

"I wish to tell you that I want a chapel built here in my honour. I am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue to pray the rosary every day. The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon return to their homes."

During the Second Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima on 13 July 1917 she said “I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the communion of reparation on the first Saturday's. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace. If not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world".

On June 13, 1929, while Sister Lucy was at the novitiate of the Dorotheans at Tuy, Spain, she was praying by herself in the convent chapel at midnight with only the sanctuary lamp lit. Our Lady appeared to her and said "The moment has come when God asks the Holy Father to make, in union with all the bishops of the world, the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means. So numerous are the souls which the justice of God condemns for sins committed against Me, that I come to ask for reparation. Sacrifice yourself for this intention and pray."

The Feast Day of The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 25 March 2022.

On this date the Pope also consecrated the Church and all humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, in union with the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and very many Bishops around the world. As in the case of the Act of Entrustment by Pope St. John Paul II in 1984 and previous consecrations by Pope Pius XII and Pope St. John Paul II, this consecration was not in the exact form requested by Our Blessed Mother.

Immaculate Queen of Peace, pray for us.
